WORK IN TRANSITION

Work in Transition is an essay film that paints a picture of the life and career concepts of job nomads — people who frequently change their profession.

The film reflects the structures and contradictions of the late capitalism and ironises our meritocratic society.

Jobnomads have unusual Vitas that reflect a searching process, in contrast to today‘s specialisation. Their job titles show a wide range of skills they have accumulated over time.

Their interest in different activities motivates them more than the identification with a ready-made profile. They work on a task as long as they want or need to, then they leave.

Embracing risks and opportunities, they walk the path to their goals — or is this even the escape route from alienation and exploitation? Does this strategy help them overcome the powerlessness they find themselves in, within a company or in the society?

Jobnomads are indeed not easy to read: For some, they are unreliable, impatient, unfaithful and indecisive; for others, courageous, versatile, exciting and smart.

So is job nomadism an expression of free will or rather of necessity? Is it a phenomenon that is only possible in a certain luxury position? Does it have something to do with human nature? And above all: does our society still (or again) need eternal cross-jobbers and almost-all-rounders?

Winner in the category „Best Diploma Film“ (DE: „Bester Hochschulabschlussfilm“) from the Jury of the Hessian Film Award 2023 (DE: „Hessischer Film- und Kinopreis 2023“).

Jury motivation: „Film school is one of the best places to learn and test your own film language. With its poetic narrative style and visually powerful language, this film is an example of the talent that grows here: the filmmaker takes a self-confident and sensitive look at an important topic of our time: how do we want to live in the future? What does work mean in our private lives and for society? The narrative style never imposes itself and manages to capture something bigger through a clever selection of personal stories — including director’s own. With unusual interview shots and an eye for detail, the filmmaker makes viewers smile and think. Every image seems new — real cinema.“
