PROJECT “PHAGEN”
The Atemspende association was founded by employees and patient families of the Department of Pediatric Pneumology, Allergology and Cystic Fibrosis at the Center for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at the University Medical Center Mainz (Germany), as well as practicing pneumologists. In their daily work with the patients and their families, they see that important aspects in the care of children and adults with chronic respiratory diseases are neglected. The daily struggle to maintain quality of life is often associated with considerable psychological, social and financial burdens for those affected.
Bacteriophages are often the last hope for patients with multi-resistant germs. Treatment in Germany is currently not possible due to legal hurdles. The aim of Atemspende is to change this. They are supporting a research project at Goethe University Frankfurt to establish phage therapy in Germany. They are also working to establish an interest group of patients who, together with researchers and doctors, will campaign for a revision of German legislation in order to create the long overdue legal basis for phage therapy in Germany.
Dr. Würstle is a leading researcher in the field of phages and works as a doctor and laboratory manager at the University Hospital Frankfurt am Main. As part of a pilot project on phage therapy, which is also supported by Atemspende, she is researching the use of phage therapy for patients with multi-resistant bacterial infections. The project aims to make phage therapy possible in Germany, which is particularly promising for people with chronic lung diseases who often suffer from multi-resistant germs.
In this interview with Atemspende e.V., she explains what phages are, how the therapy works and how the project is progressing (https://atemspende.de/phagen/).
