LABOR DER ZUKUNFT

An experimental and interactive exhibition that speculatively explores possible futures (Foto: Kira Jacobi).

TREAD ON MY DREAMS

Students are working at their final semester exhibition. The first seminar hours, laboratories, excursions and final presentations just before the exhibition have been recorded in a short documentary film. The images describe the location before the exhibition (past) through the students’ work (present) looking at their imagination (future) and stand as a metaphor for the creative process: ‘Experience-Reflect-Create’. Viewers are accompanied by the voices of the protagonists working on the task.

For this projekt I also wrote a short reflection, published as a catalogue entry (E. Proietti, “Zukunft?” in T. Steiner (ed.), “Labor der Zukunft — Katalog der Ausstellung”, Hochschule RheinMain 2022, p. 162).

The exhibition “Labor der Zukunft” of the Crossmedia Spaces master’s programme was developed in 2021-2022. Under the motto “Future as a space of possibility”, students at RheinMain University of Applied Sciences developed final theses and semester projects.

A vacant residential building in Wiesbaden on the edge of a newly emerging creative hub — the “Haus Metzler” — became a laboratory for artistic research and a stage for experimental media works and interactive installations.

The future is not just the time that lies ahead of us. The future can always be a space of possibility and a parallel world. In the fields of design and art, intensive work is being done to explore potentials and possibilities and, above all, to make them bigger.

With a fictitious, speculative, ironic or counterfactual view, artistic and design projects capture views of such possible futures. In doing so, they provoke us to leave the well-trodden paths of reality and the answers to solutions. They make us think or smile. And they open us up to change.
